THE POWER OF 15 MINUTES

It’s easy to complain that there is never enough hours in the day, but that’s not always true. The time may not stand out like a sore thumb because it doesn’t always come in hours at a time.  Instead the time comes in short intervals throughout the day.  15 minutes is all you need to complete those little tasks around the house.

You can do a lot more than you think in 15 minutes.  I challenge you to set a timer for 15 minutes and go. When it buzzes, stop and take a look at what you accomplished. I bet it was more than you expected.

When you set yourself up to complete those tasks in 15 minutes, things actually start to happen.
  • You actually start the task
  • You end up finishing
  • You will probably end up doing more than 15 minutes

I noticed I would have an extra 15 minutes here and there, but I wasted them instead of being productive. Those 15 minutes never seemed like enough time to finish anything.  The truth is, you can finish many side to-do’s in those 15 minutes that come between other activities.
I chose 15 minutes because that’s my sweet spot. Previously, I would set a timer for 30 minutes, but I started losing motivation by the 20 minute mark. My mind started to wander and I wanted to move to another task or my phone. Instead of being able to complete my task, I was creating excuses before I started the next time. I moved down to 15 minutes and it set a goal that I knew I could accomplish.

The following list I outlined are meant for 15 minute intervals. You don’t go in thinking you’re going to do it all. The kitchen isn’t going to get done all at once, because you don’t have all at once. Instead you break the kitchen down into sections.

To-Do’s in 15 minutes

  • Living room pick up
  • Empty and reload dishwasher & clear the counters
  • Sweep and Vacuum
  • Clear bathroom counters & wipe down mirrors
  • Sweep bathroom floor and take out bathroom trash
  • Sort the laundry
  • Clear bedroom floor
  • Change out the laundry
  • Clean out pantry
  • Clean out fridge/freezer
  • Wipe down cabinets
  • Clean all the windows
  • Dust TV’s and shelves
  • Clean out the junk drawer
  • Go over your monthly budget
  • So much more

Love this concept! I so agree you’ll end of being more productive. Plus, 15 minutes seems less threatening and cumbersome. This will help me start. Great idea,

This is so smart! I set timers when I’m working, but I’ve never tried it when cleaning. I find that it helps me get more done, though.

I love the power of planning. It makes things go so much smoother. If only I did it all the time.

Yes. You’re so right. Fifteen minutes can mean a lot, and little steps lead up to big progress. Now all I have to do is get myself OFF of social media during my spare time and start doing productive things like this instead!

All of these! Some times I get lost on social media, when I could definitely be spending my time more wisely doing things that are more productive in a short period of time!

Preach! You can accomplish so much in 15 minutes. My favorite thing to do in that time is straighten up and make to-do lists.

These are really nice ideas! I usually do a really quick clean in the bathroom and kitchen before going to sleep, wiping up everything. It’s so nice to wake up to clean bathroom and clean kitchen counter.

Love it! Such great advice. I use tricks like these when I’ve let the house get messy and I’m dreading how long it will take to get it cleaned up. Once I get started I can usually keep cleaning, or at least come back and do another then another 15 minutes until it’s all tidy again.

I love doing things in time bursts like this. I use the Pomodoro method which are 25 minute chunks of time when I’m working and home stuff is usually done in 15-30 minute bursts.

Love this. Sometimes I even do 5 minute pick-ups just to get myself motivated to clean – and it works!

I use to do this when the kids were home. We would each pick a room and spend 15 minutes picking and straightening up. Amazing how much can be done and the feeling is one of accomplishment. Do this morning and in evening works great.

I love the idea of getting the children involved too. Asking my kids to clean their rooms is a chore in itself, but I’ve noticed for some odd reason when we use the timer for other things, magic happens. I don’t know why I didn’t think to use it for cleaning. I blame lost brain cells during pregnancy, lol!

Those are such great ideas! I would also add meditation and a quick workout. Today, I did this 5 minute workout which don’t be fooled, got my heart rate up, AND it gave me the energy refresh I needed as I felt like I was about to fall asleep working! haha
